MT4 Platform Connection Bars
To test your MT4 link to the broker's server, look at the status bar. It sits on the MetaTrader 4 interface.
The illustration provided below clarifies and depicts the MetaTrader 4 Connection Bars as displayed in the MetaTrader 4 Status Bar:

The MT4 software status bar is used to display if there is a connection to the servers or not, if there is a connection to the server, then a trader can place trade positions to the online market using MetaTrader 4 charts. When there's a connection MetaTrader 4 charts can then keep updating - if MetaTrader 4 Charts on your platform software are Not Updating - you should first check the connectivity using the MT4 Connection bars in MT4 Status Bar.
Green Bars - On the Connection bars in the MT4 Status Bar, green bars mean there is a connection: next to the green bars, you will also see the amount of kilobytes downloaded and uploaded as a number.
Red Bars - The connection bars in the MT4 Status Bar indicate that there is no connection, preventing trade positions from being opened with the online brokers' server.
Red bars could also mean your internet is not working, so if you are using a connection like dial up and see red bars, it might be your internet, and not the online broker's server. Traders often ask: Why aren't the MetaTrader 4 Charts Updating? If your MetaTrader 4 charts are not updating, you may need to first check if the MetaTrader 4 software is connected to your online broker using these MT4 connection bars on the MetaTrader 4 status bar, which means MetaTrader 4 Charts are Not Updating.
To show the status bars on the MetaTrader 4 software, one needs to use the "Status Bar" button on the 'View' menu options such as illustrated below, Click to check, once the option is checked the MetaTrader 4 status bar will be displayed at the bottom right corner of your MT4 Software Platform.

How can you check for an internet connection in MetaTrader 4?
MetaTrader 4 Software Connection Bars on the Status Bar - Green bars mean the connection is online, while Red bars mean it's offline. The connection could be your internet company or the broker's server. Most times, it'll be your internet company, since online brokers have 2 to 3 servers working at the same time, and it's unlikely they'd all be offline, even for a second.
