One quick technique to check the real time internet connection between your MT4 software & the server of your broker is to check the MT4 status bars on the MetaTrader 4 platform interface - MetaTrader 4 Connection Bar in MT4 Status Bar.

The MT4 software status bar is used to display if there is a connection to the servers or not, if there is a connection to the server, then a trader can place trade positions to the online market using MetaTrader 4 charts. The connection may be either your internet service provider or broker server. Most of the time it'll be your internet service provider as the online brokers have 2 to 3 simultaneous servers and there is no way all of them can be offline even if it is for 1 second.
